Our History
Founded in 1964, Montessori School of Waukesha (MSOW) is the oldest and largest Montessori school in Waukesha County, as well as Wisconsin’s only American Montessori Society-accredited Montessori school. Over the years, the school has built a solid reputation of excellence in the field of early childhood, elementary and adolescent education. Each year the administrative staff receives requests to provide visitation and observation opportunities for local high school and technical college early childhood development students, college education students, and Montessori training institute students. In addition, school leaders and school district leaders often come to, "see what Montessori is all about."
MSOW currently has fourteen mixed-age classrooms. Children aged 18 to 36 months old are in one Pre-Children’s House classroom. Children aged 2.5*/3 years to 5K are in one of five Children’s House classrooms. Each of the four Lower Elementary classrooms is designed for 1st-3rd grade students. Children in 4th-6th grade join one of the 3 Upper Elementary classrooms and students in grades 7-8 are in the Middle School Program.
Authentic Montessori environments
As an American Montessori Society (AMS) accredited school, we uphold the highest standards in Montessori education, ensuring that our students receive a quality experience that promotes critical thinking, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. In this supportive setting, children are empowered to take charge of their own educational journeys, cultivating a sense of responsibility and community.
Our school proudly offers authentic
Montessori classroom environments that foster independent exploration and personalized learning. Guided by the principles of Montessori philosophy, our highly trained Montessori credentialed and Wisconsin DPI licensed teachers create nurturing spaces where children engage with hands-on materials and collaborative activities tailored to their individual interests and developmental needs.
OUR NINE-ACRE CAMPUS
Our school is situated on a nine-acre spacious fenced campus on Summit Avenue in Waukesha. Our Main Campus building contains 13 academic classrooms, a library, an art room, a gymnasium, and a performance stage. The Campus West building houses administrative offices, our middle school program classroom, and a music room for choir, strings, and general music. Our grounds also offer three different outdoor play/learning spaces and a greenhouse.
Campus West is also home to the Global Montessori Educators Institute (GMEI) Teacher Education Program. GMEI prepares and credentials future Montessori teachers.

About Dr. Maria Montessori
Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952), the first female physician in Italy, began her work while observing the behavior and education of mentally disabled children. She began to develop and apply her method by combining her ideas with those of other physicians, educators and anthropologists, such as Froebel, Sergi, Itard, and Seguin.
In the early 1900s, she was asked to educate a group of “unruly” children in a housing project in Rome. She named this classroom, which opened in January of 1907, Casa dei Bambini, or Children’s House. Dr. Montessori had discovered that children have an innate desire to learn, explore, and master new skills. Through the multi-sensory materials she designed, children, starting as young as age 2 years old, quickly thrived in the areas of self-achievement, reading, writing, and math.
The results of her education philosophies quickly gained recognition and widespread international attention, an endeavor to which she dedicated her entire life. Montessori education has since been taught at schools around the world for more than 100 years!
